Meryl China Diaries

I used to be a fussy person, 'particular' about hygeine and food and things like that and with little tolerance to suffering fools. I have since discovered that these traits result in going hungry and being lonely and so I have reconsidered my strategy in adjusting to life here.

I used to be able to go grocery shopping unaccompanied, I used to not pay any attention to where I was walking. Nowadays, I do not have those luxuries. I am little help to Kyle when he goes shopping for us because guessing what is inside the packaging just by looking at the picture on the box is not always a sure thing, and walking around unawares in Beijing could mean that you fall victim (not to crime) but to someone else's spit.

I used to believe it was unthinkable to eat stale bread, but here where I live that's the least of my worries. I never used to eat 2 minute noodles but now they are our weekly treat!

I'm not used to being in the dark all the time and feeling self-conscious, but now it's like second nature to me. And wearing the same outfit for days on end has never been a policy of mine, but these people may be onto something.

We live in another world here in Beijing...but the strangest thing of all is that we are actually beginning to settle and find our place in it. I guess that says a lot about us.

I'm a little curious....

do 2-minute noodles REALLY take 2 minutes to cook?

Hi there gorgeous girl! Its Megan Coughtrey! Im glad to see that you are doing so well for yourself in China- its one place I am also going to travel to when I finish University next year. It seems like such an interesting country, with so much history and culture, Im sure you agree! Ive had a read through your whole blog, as advised by your dad, and Im glad to know that you are keeping well.
Going back in time, your wedding photos are absolutly gorgeous, it looked like you had a lovely day, and your new hubby looks v.nice. I have been with my boyfriend for nearly 5 years no, but marriage is NOT on the cards-hehe!
It seems so long since we saw you last, its strange to think how much time has passed and how many things have happened over the years. Like I said I have one year left in Uni, studying Politics and American Studies, which I thouroughly enjioy, I am hoping to become a teacher.
I will keep updated on how you are doing, and maybe sometime in the near future hopefully we can get together one of these days.
Loook after yourself and enjoy China!
Lots and lots of love, best wishes and happy thoughts.

Your apartment looks like home my friend:o) I guess Bangkok and Beijing must be really similar in terms of available accomadation.

My first 2 years I lived in an "apartment" in Bangkok which was a room with a small bathroom- it was "fully furnished" with a rock hard bed and an airconditioning unit.

I'm very impressed to see that you have a nice kitchen- something I have yet to acquire, but am working on for our new house. We cook with a small gas bottle, like one that you would take on a picnic in South Africa:o)But strange and wonderful things like that become normal eventually and it's quite strange to think that I ever lived differently.

Glad to see that you are settling in - 2 minute noodles, you will discover, can be used to make many things- Noiy and I even take them home when we go to SA as we miss them so much when we are there:o)

Love you much my friend
